Engineering/Project REAL
Raider Engineering and Academic Leadership
A partnership between Richland School District One,The University of South Carolina, and Midlands Technical College
Mission
The mission of the W.J. Keenan High School Raider Engineering and Academic Leadership Program (Project REAL) is to actively engage students in math and science courses that are enriched with engineering applications to increase students' academic performance in the study of math, science, engineering, and technology related fields at the post-secondary level.
The focus in engineering will accomplish two things:
1. Increase student achievement in the math and science areas.
2.Increase student success in traditionally underrepresented fields of study at post-secondary institutions.
Expectations
Project REAL is designed to encourage students to pursue excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through a rigorous academic program. All students are expected to do the following:
- Attend summer enrichment camp
- Attend after-school tutoring and/or test-prep sessions
- Participate in leadership training, monthly showcase meetings, and community service projects.
- Conduct themselves as leaders inside and outside of the classroom.
Curriculum
The focus will include a rigorous curriculum based on high standards with the expectations that all students will achieve at high levels in math and science. A direct partnership with The University of South Carolina and Midlands Technical College will widen course offerings, to included PLTW (Project Lead The Way) pre-engineering courses, and benefit all parties involved. W.J. Keenan High School teachers work with USC faculty to receive training that will prepare them to teach PLTW courses. Students will have opportunities to participate in the most challenging high school courses, and they will be encourage to take college level courses during their high school career. The high quality of professional dialogue between USC and W.J. Keenan High School faculty members will further accelerate student achievement.
