When the 2017-2018 school year begins in August, students at Caughman Road Elementary School will have a new outdoor learning center to enjoy, thanks to a grant from the Walmart Foundation.
Walmart representatives presented a $35,000 grant check to school and district officials during a special celebration held March 16 at Caughman Road. The school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) raised $10,000 for new playground equipment, and the Walmart grant provides the remainder of the funding needed to make the project a reality.
“We believe that this joint alliance will assist us in providing an outdoor learning space which will benefit thousands of students in the years to come,” said Principal Shawn Hall. “When students have a safe space to release their stress and physical energy in a positive way, disciplinary problems decrease and academic success increases.”
The equipment selected for this area will provide a safe and accessible area for Caughman Road students and community children to play. The main focus of the outdoor learning center is action-based learning and the growth of the school’s cultural kinetics classroom.
Local Walmart associates will remain hands-on partners by assisting with the development of the outdoor learning center and exploring volunteer opportunities at the school.
“We’re proud to partner with Caughman Road Elementary and its PTO to help build this creative outdoor learning area for the children,” said Brooke Mueller, Walmart public affairs director. “We salute the community teamwork that’s making it possible, and believe it will be a valuable addition to the education experience kids will enjoy here for years to come.”
